Arbetarkommunen bildas genom en utbrytning på riksplanet ur socialdemokraterna. Inledningsvis används 1917 namnet Uppsala Socialdemokratiska Vänsterförening. Senare samma år övergår man att kalla sig Uppsala Vänstersocialistiska Arbetarekommun. 1921 beslutade en majoritet av medlemmarna att ansluta sig till Komintern, vilket medförde att namnet ändrades till Uppsala kommunistiska arbetarkommun.
